Northrup School Scrapbooks (Ms. 81)

Description:

Two scrapbooks assembled by Sunbeam Northrup to document her school years in Columbus. The material is mostly from 1934 and 1935, though some earlier material is included. There are report cards, programs, tickets, photographs, greeting cards, letters, and other items. The scrapbooks were donated to the library by Randa Simmons on behalf of the estate of Sunbeam Northrup in April 2007. Sunbeam Northrup graduated Columbus High School as valedictorian in 1935. She died October 30, 2006. She took a bachelor’s degree in education at Mary Hardin-Baylor College in 1939, and a master’s degree in education at University of Houston in 1952. She taught school at various locations in Texas, served as teacher, principal, and curriculum supervisor for United States Army schools in Germany, France, and Spain for fifteen years, and worked for the Teacher Corps Office of Education, Health and Welfare training college graduates to teach impoverished children. She maintained a home on Nevis, in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and co-authored two books on the islands, A Motoring Guide to Nevis and A Motoring Guide to St. Kitts.
