James T. Pettus Diary (Ms. 68)

The diary kept by James T. Pettus, sergeant in Company F, 8th Texas Cavalry (Terry’s Texas Rangers), Confederate States Army, while on campaign from February 12, 1862 until June 27, 1862. Pettus was killed in action August 29, 1862. The diary was likely returned to Colorado County by Oliver Ewing Herbert, a member of Pettus' company and his step-brother. It was donated to the library by Julia Ann McDonald, a descendant of Caleb Claiborne Herbert (who was a half-brother of Pettus and a step-brother of Oliver Herbert), on October 1, 2002.
